Many of you have tried artificial tears in an attempt to alleviate your dry eye symptoms. Some of you may have even tried Restasis. While these treatments may work for some, Restasis in particular can take months to show any effect...and people get tired of the wait!
Enter Xiidra (pronouced Zy-druh). This new medication is the newest FDA approved treatment for dry eyes and was released in July of 2016. Made up of Lifitegrast 5%, this new class of medication is the first to be a lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 (LFA-1) antagonist, meaning that it works in an entirely different way than Restasis. Yipee!
But first, there are a few similarities to Restasis. It comes in individual vials and is dosed twice per day. Other than that, this is a whole new world. In clinical studies, Xiidra was shown to have effects on dry eye disease within 2 weeks. 2 WEEKS! This is a huge benefit considering that many Restasis patients will drop out before they even hit the 6 month mark and notice a difference in their symptoms.
As far as adverse events, or side effects from this new eye drop, many people experienced burning upon installation as well as a funny taste in their mouth. Other than that, there weren’t any statistically significant complications. As with all current dry eye treatments, use of the medication must be lifelong to continue noticing the benefits.
Seeing as how this new medication begins to work within 2 weeks, has minimal side effects, and is super safe, Xiidra should be of great benefit to the 30 million dry eye disease sufferers around the world. Are you excited to try it?
